7 ways to cut patient waiting time in your clinic
Long waits are the most common complaint patients have about clinics, and they cost you too: crowded waiting rooms, rushed consultations and patients who don’t come back. Most of the waiting comes from a few fixable habits.
1. Give time slots, not token numbers
A token tells a patient their place in the queue, not when to arrive, so everyone comes at the start of OPD. Booking patients into time slots spreads arrivals across the session.
2. Let patients book online
Every booking taken on the phone ties up your front desk while patients wait at the counter. When patients book online by themselves, your staff can look after the people in front of them.
3. Collect history before the visit
Ask patients to fill in the reason for the visit, their medicines and allergies before they come. The doctor starts the consultation already knowing the basics.
4. Ask for reports in advance
Patients searching their bags or phones for last month’s report slow every consultation. Let them upload reports before the visit so the doctor can look at them first.
5. Keep video hours separate
If you also consult online, don’t squeeze video calls between clinic patients. Separate hours keep both queues moving.
6. Block leaves early
When a doctor’s leave isn’t recorded in advance, patients turn up for a cancelled clinic. Mark leaves as soon as they’re known, so no new bookings are taken for those days.
7. Write prescriptions digitally
Typed prescriptions from a medicine list are faster to write, easy to read at the pharmacy, and already on the patient’s record for the next visit.
